In Psalm 54 David has just been betrayed by people he thought were his allies. Once again he laments his situation in verses 1-3, but in verse 4 he declares, “Behold, God is my helper; the upholder of my life.” He recognizes that God will never betray him and that his very existence is dependent on the Lord.
When faced with betrayal or hurtful acts from those we trusted, we too can seek refuge from the One who breathed life into our lungs and who knitted us together in our mother’s womb. He will never betray us. He will sustain us and bring us through every trial.
The pain of betrayal is real, but so is God’s ever present love for us. Both things can be true at the same time.
