David wrote this psalm during a time when he was pursued by his enemies who wanted to kill him. The declarations in the verse are clear indicators of David’s faith in God’s ability to protect him. The metaphors of light, salvation, and stronghold reflect his reliance on God’s guidance, his trust that the Lord would deliver him from his foes, and that God was the source of his strength. Ultimately, David understood that with God on his side, he had nothing to fear.
Like David, when life pushes against me and my mind start spiraling, today’s verse reminds me that when I surrender and allow God to guide me, my fear subsides. When I trust Him to keep me safe, I relax. When I let Him be my strength, I can accomplish what He calls me to do.
