Psalm 115 is part of the Hallel, a collection of Jewish hymns sung during the Passover meal. Jesus and His disciples probably sang this at the Last Supper. The psalm is a response to the taunting of Egyptians regarding the Israelites invisible God.

In verse one the psalmist declares the Lord as sovereign by repeating the phrase, “Not us.” One phrase acknowledges that it is the “unseen God” who has helped them defeat enemies, delivered and restored them.

The declaration of sovereignty is followed by, “for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!” These words establish that God deserves praise because of who He is. He keeps His promises even when His people are weak or failing.

The lesson for believers today is to remember that God is the antidote for idolatry. True worship shifts our gaze away for tangible things we can control or value and anchors is in the true sovereign creator. We worship Him because of who He is and thank Him for all He has done.
