Psalm 91:1-2 is an opening declaration of absolute trust in God’s ultimate protection and care.

While the authorship of the psalm is anonymous it is traditionally attributed to Moses or David. The psalm’s overall tone is confident and reassuring in times of difficulty or stress.

The imagery of “shelter,” “abiding in the shadow” are reflections of the Holy of Holies in the temple where the wings of the cherubim hovered over the arch of the covenant.

A significant point to consider when reading this psalm is that it doesn’t promise believers a trouble free life, rather the psalm assures believers that God provides a safe haven and ultimate refuge amidst the trials we face.

No trial is too big for God to help us navigate through. He is our refuge and our strength.
