Psalm 34:8 is an invitation to dig into God’s word rather than just reading it casually or memorizing a few verses. Using the terms taste and see tells us to be intentional and diligent in studying all He has done so we really get to know His character. Doing so
allows us to experience Him on an entirely new level.
Think of it like this, when we see an ad for a food item on social media, we see what it looks like and can imagine what it smells and tastes like, but until we taste it, we don’t know whether we like it or not. We don’t know if our preconceived notion about it is accurate until it touches our lips. We have to experience it with all our senses to fully appreciate it.
The difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge of God’s goodness is simple. Head knowledge is like reading a recipe, collecting the ingredients, but never making the dish. Heart knowledge is reading the recipe, making sure you understand how to prepare it, preparing it, then tasting the dish to see if it’s good.
Similarly, we can know scripture intellectually and logically predict how they apply to our lives, but until we spend time understanding them, we don’t fully comprehend how they affect our personal relationship with the Lord.
Challenge:
What can you do daily to “taste and see” that the Lord is good?
