Ephesians 6:11 is one of my favorite passages because I have so many memories associated with it. I remember the first time the idea of putting on God’s armor became real to me. I was in the chapel of a hospital where my mother-in-law was undergoing cancer surgery. As I prayed, I noticed a pamphlet that had an article about putting on God’s armor. In the article, the author explained the importance of visualizing putting on each peace every morning to make sure we are protected. As I stood in the small room, I quietly spoke all the verses about the armor and imagined putting each piece on my body. While the experience wasn’t profound, I felt something that calmed my anxiety and allowed me to focus.
The chapel experience led me to study the passage and eventually to sharing the idea of making putting on the armor part of a daily routine. The idea is thinking about our morning routine and assigning a piece of armor to what we do to prepare for the day. For example: helmet of salvation=brushing my hair. It may sound silly, but it’s been effective.
As an earlier verse in Ephesians 6 says, we do not battle against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces. (Paraphrased). I think actively putting on God’s armor is a vital part of our day.
Challenge:
Think about your morning routine.
Now read Ephesians 6:10-20.
Now connect an activity to each piece of armor. Read the passage out loud while you complete your morning routine.
Record any thoughts or feelings you have over the next few days.
