Isaiah 26:3 contains a simple, yet powerful message about maintaining peace. We must keep our focus on the Lord and trust is what allows us to do so.

Years ago, my late husband, John, told me a story that illustrates keeping our eyes on Jesus. In his early 20s, he went to a park with a friend and decided to see how fast they could make the old fashioned merry-go-round go. (Large metal circle with metal hand rails). He described looking down as they pushed toward maximum speed. Soon they were falling and getting banged up by the metal poles. Then John’s friend noticed a tree near the merry-go-round and suggested they focus their eyes on the tree instead of their feet. When they kept their eyes on the tree, they didn’t fall as the speed increased and, according to John, the old merry-go-round got incredibly fast.

As John told me the story he recalled how the experience reminded him to trust and focus on the Lord when surrounded by chaos. While the story may sound silly, it reminds me to shift my focus from the chaos that may cause me to fall, to the Lord, who will keep me steady even through the toughest of times.

Challenge:

When has focusing on Jesus instead of the chaos calmed your soul?
