I was surprised to discover that Psalm 71 is attributed to an older King David around the time that he was engaged in Absalom’s rebellion against him. During this season, David was mocked by his enemies because of his age, dealing with physical decline, and told God had abandoned him.

Yet, his response was profound and reflects steadfast faith and devotion to the Lord. In verse 7 David declares how God has protected him from birth. In verse 9 he begs God not to abandon him in his old age, but in verse 8 David praises the God who has never left him.
The praise is all consuming, declares God’s sovereignty, and continues all day.

As I begin my day, I’m reminded that even in my old age, God is by my side and I will praise Him all the day long.
