David wrote this psalm during a time of extreme danger. The Philistines had seized him in Gath and he was hunted by King Saul. He was being attacked on all sides. However, instead of panicking or relying on his own strength and wisdom, he processed his fear through his trust in God’s character and promises.

We can learn from David’s example. In times of extreme stress and fear, we have a choice. We can yield to fear and allow terror to drive our thoughts and actions, or we can trust God to get us through the situation.

Letting go of my need to control outcomes is one of the hardest things I struggle with when there seems to be no way out of a circumstance. Yet, time and time again, my mind and emotions settle when I speak David’s words out loud, “I shall not be afraid what can flesh to do me?”
