We were not designed to live in isolation from other humans. God is relational and we were created in His image. From the beginning, God made sure humanity had companionship. We broke the connection with Him at the Fall, but the Lord had a plan to restore it through Christ.

We need connections with God and others for support and accountability. When left to our own devices, we don’t always make great choices and we can fall deeper into behaviors or thoughts that pull us further from God. Friends who put our feet to the fire, in love, when they see us slipping are essential for growth. Friends who celebrate our victories lift our spirits and restore confidence.

Human connection is literally vital to our survival. The Covid lockdown dramatically demonstrated humanity’s the need to connect. In the early days of the lockdown, my apartment complex restricted visitors because I live in a senior property. We were encouraged to stay in our apartments and the common areas were locked. I had no human contact for 3 months. As the result, depression started creeping in like I hadn’t experienced in years. It was only through my connections with God and with family and friends via phone calls and FaceTime that I maintained my sanity.

While it is true that everyone needs time alone, humans generally don’t function well in isolation from others for extended periods of time. We need each other to sharpen every aspect of our lives.
