Jesus spoke these words at the Last Supper, shortly before He was arrested. He was preparing the disciples for His impending death. At the same time He made it clear that He now regarded them as His friends. He wanted them to understand the depth of His sacrifice and His love for them.
While John 15:13 specifically refers to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the cross, we can apply the same concept to our relationships with each others. Laying down our lives for our friends doesn’t necessarily mean dying for them. I think the verse challenges us to lay down our pride, ego, personal comforts, and ambitions to serve others, being careful not to overextend ourselves to the point of exhaustion.
Our sacrificial love doesn’t have to be loud or draw attention. Rather it’s the quiet ways we help a friend, comfort a grieving person, celebrate a victory, or simply be present with them when we see their need.
