This verse hit me hard today when I realized the context.

While Matthew 18:20 is specifically referencing how to manage conflicts and sin among believers, the overarching message emphasizes the importance of community and unity within the body of the church.

The full chapter describes the steps that we should follow to resolve conflicts among believers. Verse 20 provides a reminder that when 2 or 3 come to the Lord in His name He is with them. “In His name” means reflecting the Lord’s character and focusing on truth and restoration rather than personal grudges.

Because we are human, conflicts will happen and today’s verse reminds us to approach resolution by following the steps Jesus laid out for us. He will be with us as we follow His instruction and strive to reflect His character in all we do.

Community not only provides support, but also accountability. Community strengthens the body in more ways than most people imagine.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is to keep short accounts and to address conflicts early so they don’t evolve to bigger issues, always keeping the focus on Jesus not my personal hurt. Hard to do sometimes, but essential as we build relationships.
