This iconic verse is more profound than many realize.

Paul struggled with the reality that many Israelites were trying to achieve salvation through their own works rather than submitting to faith in Christ. In verse 17, he emphasizes that God has provided the message, but it must be received and accepted.

Faith involves more than an intellectual understanding of the gospel message. True faith is expressed when we completely trust and rely on Jesus Christ as our savior.

Hearing goes beyond physical listening and means actively accepting of the gospel message.

The word of Christ refers to the gospel message, but also emphasizes the importance of knowing scripture in the depths of our souls.

Knowing scripture involves more than memorizing verses. To “know” something is to understand it, accept it, share it and be able to apply it to our lives which requires immersing ourselves in scripture. Knowing includes faith, study, and prayer.

When I spend time in scripture instead of scrolling social media, I’m strengthening my faith. Scripture brings life to my soul.
