The battle between light and darkness is a recurring theme throughout the Bible with multiple references in both the New Testament and the Old Testament. While we are most familiar with New Testament passages that describe Christ as the light in the darkness, the lamp unto my feet, and other similar verses, Psalm 18:28 reminds us of the consistent thread of light (God) defeating darkness (evil) throughout scripture.

David wrote Psalm 18 to celebrate his victory over his enemies. In his celebration, He was careful to give God the glory. He acknowledged that he could not have achieved this outcome without God.

I think there are 2 lessons in today’s verse. First, there is no darkness that can overcome the light of the Lord. Second, acknowledging and expressing gratitude for His blessings is an essential part of our interaction with Him.

So many times I’ve tried to overcome darkness in my own strength and failed. Sometimes I couldn’t see the light because I allowed the darkness to overshadow everything. Then I realized He was there, ready to shine through the fog and to direct my steps to safety. I learned I can always depend on Him.

Secondly, it’s easy to take God’s intervention for granted but I’m trying to be better about expressing my gratitude each time He illuminates whatever darkness I find myself in.
