One short verse helps me understand why daily renewal is vital to my relationship with the Lord and how important it is to never lose sight of His glory, majesty, and His steadfast love for me.

Psalm 103:1 was most likely written by King David in his later years. The psalm is a hymn of praise and thanksgiving for God’s grace and goodness throughout his life. While the later verses expand to include the larger community, verse 1 is David’s internal conversation about His relationship with the Lord that offers a model for our personal interaction with God.

David begins with praise and submission. In Hebrew, the word barak means to bow or kneel which clarifies the opening statement “bless the Lord.” Blessing Him means honoring and surrendering to Him. The question I ask myself is, “Is this how I begin my conversations with the Lord?”

As David continues, we see his total devotion to God in the phrase, “everything within me.” Prayer, worship, and praise are all intended to be total devotion to the Lord. Not an afterthought or something done out of habit, but intentional complete focus on God.

Finally, David ends with “bless His holy name.” God’s name represents His entire existence and declares His sovereignty, His character, and His attributes. Remembering and acknowledging God’s glory and grace is humbling and inspiring.

Keeping these things in my heart today as I continue growing through prayer and study.
