Paul wrote Philippians from prison, but he had spent time ministering to the saints at Philippi many times. In the verses just prior to verse 4, he tells them to stop worrying, focus on what’s true and good, true and pure. Verse 4 is his summation and challenge to practice all he has taught them.

Paul’s challenge holds true for us as modern believers. We are to be doers of the word not just hearers. Listening to our watching a sermon, reading scripture or books, or listening to a Biblical scholar are good habits, but then what? If we fail to put the knowledge into practice in our daily lives have we really been transformed? Knowledge doesn’t necessarily change us, action does. Surrender does. Practicing the things we learn does.
