When I consider that Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians while under house arrest in Rome, I’m humbled and convicted. He found strength in Jesus Christ and trusted Him completely. He was totally dedicated to the Lord that his human condition literally did not matter. He knew how the story ends and lived out his faith in all he did.

Contentment, as Paul describes it, is complete dependence on Christ. It is inner satisfaction and peace that can’t be shaken by whether life is going well or falling apart. Paul states that he has “learned” to be content which tells us it is a spiritual discipline learned over time through hardships, not prosperity.

In my experience, learning contentment like this has been a rocky road with many twists and turns. However, I feel God guiding me out of striving for peace and contentment into allowing Him to settle my soul in every situation. It’s quite a different experience. I long for the day when I can say something similar to Paul’s declaration with the level of confidence he expressed. Until then, I continue learning to be content in all situations.
