Moses spoke these words to the Israelites on the plains of Moab before they crossed the Jordan River into the promised land. The words were preparing them for what they would face in their new home, a land filled with temptations and danger.

The promised land held wonderful things but also idol worshipers and Moses’ words reminded them to stay faithful and to love the Lord with their entire being. He emphasized that complete devotion to the one true God was the only way to resist the temptation of their new home.

Today, we face the enticements of modernity: immediate gratification, access to things that do not align with scripture, and subtle whispers that make sin look appealing. In such a world, Moses’s admonition is vital to our survival. Loving God with our entire being and building a relationship with Him isn’t just a nice thing to do; it’s essential to combat what surrounds us daily.

For me the question becomes, “What am I allowing into my mind, heart, and soul, today? And do the things I see, hear, and do reflect total devotion to God?”
