Paul wrote the book of Romans to a mixed church of Jews and Gentiles. Chapter 16 is a call to unity and a cautionary warning about false teachers and prophets. He reminds the church that the false teachers are instruments of Satan, but ends the chapter with the promise that God will ultimately defeat those teachers.

The Lord gives us the same promise and Paul’s warning holds true today. We are bombarded daily with theories, opinions, and interpretations of Biblical texts. As believers, Paul’s caution is essential to unity and spiritual wellbeing.

Across social media there are a multitude of people who claim divine insight and many claim prophetic wisdom and knowledge. Navigating this onslaught of information requires discernment and knowledge of Scripture. We should always hold teachers to a higher standard and test their words against what Scripture actually says.

The God of peace that Paul refers to in today’s verse refers to the biblical view of peace, not just the absence of conflict, but victory over evil and chaos. God is not the author of chaos. He brings peace to our souls. He crushes evil under our feet. When we seek Him for wisdom and discernment, we receive clarity.
