As I read today’s verse, I remember a classic painting of Jesus standing outside a wooden door, surrounded by vines and what appears to be a garden. He’s knocking on the door with a gentle smile in His face. He isn’t forcing the door open, kicking it in or banging on it with both hands. He’s just knocking and waiting patiently for someone to answer.
The peaceful scene reflects how the Lord interacts with us. He will never force His will on us. He will never beat down the door to hearts. He will stand outside the door and knock, announce who He is, and wait for us to open the door. It is up to us to hear His voice, trust Him, and allow Him to enter.
Our life experience often puts bars, double locks, and sometimes barricades on the door to protect us from a perceived threat. We can’t imagine allowing anyone into our broken heart. Yet, Jesus stands there patiently waiting, asking to come in.
He offers joy, peace, hope, and love beyond anything we can imagine. Opening the door and trusting Him is the first step toward experiencing all of these things.
