Jeremiah wrote chapter 32 during a dark in Juda. Jerusalem was under siege and the king imprisoned Jeremiah for prophesying the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the Jewish people.

Despite the desperate situation, God commanded Jeremiah to purchase a plot of land in his hometown. While he obeyed the command, Jeremiah questioned the reasonableness of the purchase given the prophecy. Today’s verse is the Lord’s response to the prophet.

The lesson from Jeremiah’s experience is two-fold. First, God is sovereign over all humanity. Second, the question He poses to the prophet is rhetorical and a reminder that there is nothing too hard for God. Perhaps the land purchase was God’s way of telling Jeremiah, “Don’t lose hope.”

Through this short verse, God reminds us that hope sometimes comes through doing something out of obedience to God’s command even when it doesn’t make sense in the natural.
