There is so much to learn from the early church. They didn’t just gather once a week to sing songs and listen to a sermon. They did life together. Acts 2:42 describes their interactions as devotion to teachings, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers.

As believers, Acts 2:42 serves as a powerful reminder to make our worship a daily habit through all that we do and to cultivate relationships with other believers to build a community that shares life together.

As I reflect on today’s verse, I can’t help but think of the little church I currently attend and how closely it reflects the elements found in Acts 2:24. We are a family of broken and hungry believers who come together often to break bread, listen to Bible based teachings, fellowship, and to pray for one another.

Now, we are not perfect in our efforts, but I honestly have never experienced the level of love and support that I’ve seen in this small group of believers. To be clear, that love extends to holding each other accountable. Our pastor doesn’t sugarcoat what being a Christian means. He speaks truth in love every Sunday.

When there is a need, the response is immediate. People are prayed over during the service. We surround each other with care and support. We are a family.

Are there elements of the early church that are missing from our congregation? Absolutely, but we are a living, growing community that does a pretty good job of reflecting, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

I’m grateful for my pastor, Chevy Chavirria, and the friends I’ve made at The Way Worship Movement where I’ve experienced love and care that extends far beyond the Sunday service.
