Psalm 118:5 highlights the importance of trusting the Lord in all circumstances. I recall a time in my life when I felt completely hopeless and saw no clear way out of a situation. As depression, guilt, shame, and anger overwhelmed me, I cried out to the Lord, but I thought He was silent. In the moment of perceived rejection, I decided to take my life.

However, God had other plans. He heard my cries and sent my pastor to literally show up just as I was about to take a handful of pills. He prayed for me, without knowing the extent of my distress. After he left, I felt overwhelming peace and gained a new resolve to live. Was I completely healed? No. But I was free from the belief that God hated me, at least for that moment.

From this experience and so many other times, I know God hears my cries. I know I can trust Him. My struggle is to diligently seek Him daily so that I automatically turn to Him in moments of great pain instead of cycling through the “what ifs” that keep me trapped in despair.
