Psalm 143 is primarily a lament written by David. He feels isolated, overwhelmed, and begs the Lord not to forsake him. Then in verse 10 his tone shifts to surrender. He asks for God’s direction and yields his will to the Lord.

As I’ve said many times, I relate to David’s words because I also have a habit of lamenting to the Lord before a surrender my will to him. I know He is sovereign, yet I cry out in anguish lamenting all my troubles as though they are somehow the Lord’s fault. In reality most of my troubles are the result of my poor choices or the choices of others that impact me.

When I finally stop the lament and remember to ask the Lord to show me His will and teach me His way, the lightbulb turns on and I can make to healthier choices, develop healthier relationships, and deepen my relationship with the Lord.
