Rejoice, pray, and give thanks are simple straightforward guidelines for our interaction with the Lord. However, Paul adds caveats to each instruction that creates depth and strengthens the relationship between us and God.

At first glance, rejoice always may sound impossible because in our human understanding we cannot comprehend “being happy” all the time. The caveat in this phrase is that rejoicing isn’t the same as being happy. Joy is planted deep in our soul by the Holy Spirit and is not affected by circumstances. So we can rejoice always because we know the Lord is faithful to bring us through every situation we experience.

Pray without ceasing may also seem like a daunting task, but, in reality, constant pray simply means having conversations with the Lord throughout the day. They don’t have to be formal or liturgical, but can include singing, casual talking, or just sitting quietly in His presence.

The last guidance is often the most difficult. Giving thanks in all circumstances may seem irrational until we realize the phrase is “in all circumstances,” not “for.” Basically, the guidance is to give thanks to the Lord no matter what situation we find ourselves in. Even that sounds difficult to some, but truthfully, we can give thanks for all the Lord has done, for His love, grace, and mercy no matter what we’re going through. And focusing on those things has helped me navigate difficult situations many times in my life.

Rejoice, pray, and give thanks are three pillars that strengthen our relationship with the Lord.
