As promised, I’m taking time to dig a little deeper into the individual pieces of God’s armor as described by Paul in Ephesians 6. Today, I’ll focus on the belt of truth.

First, it’s important to understand that Paul wrote Ephesians from prison and used the metaphor of familiar Roman soldier armor to explain spiritual readiness. However, as I discuss each piece of spiritual armor, I encourage you to think about something familiar in your life that is part of your daily practice of preparing for your day that could serve the same purpose.

An interesting aspect of reading about the armor is understanding Paul’s focus for each piece. In Ephesians 6:14, he writes, “Stand therefore”, which conveys preparation and defense rather than attack posture. The message is we are to stand against temptation rather than wage war. (Later pieces are offensive weapons).

The Belt of Truth
The Roman soldier’s heavy belt held his tunic in place and held his sword. In other words, the belt kept everything secure and ensured the sword was readily available. Spiritually, having “the belt of truth” means anchoring our lives in God’s truth and living with integrity and honesty so we can resist temptation.

Keeping the belt in good repair involves accountability and taking responsibility for our actions. And knowing God’s truth. Without knowledge we don’t understand when temptation is luring us away from truth. As I’ll discuss later the belt holds the sword (the Word of God) and a loose or worn belt will not keep the sword secure. Keeping our minds focused on things that align with truth strengthens our belt. But we have to be sure we actually remember we have it on everyday.
