Even with all his flaws, David relied on God to sustain and guide him. He sought the Lord daily and trusted him. Today’s verse provides a glimpse into David’s conversations with the Lord and perhaps gives us an example of how we might approach God.

The verse begins with “let me hear,” which emphasizes the importance of listening. I think sometimes much of our prayers are spent asking for this or that and very little time is given to simply listening. Here, David asks God to help him hear of God’s love. He wants to be reminded just how much God loves him. Sometimes that remembrance is sufficient to settle our souls.

Next, David declares his trust and devotion to the Lord. He acknowledges God’s sovereignty and submits to the Lord for direction. He yields control, “You make known to me the way I should go.”

Finally, He honors the Lord by saying, “For to you I lift up my soul.” He surrenders his will to God without reservation.

Each day we have the opportunity to greet the Lord with praise, to be reminded of His love, to receive His guidance, and to lift up our entire being to Him. The Lord will bless us, comfort us, direct our paths, and lift us up, but our experience of His presence is impacted by our level of engagement with Him.
