This is one of my favorite verses because it paints such an amazing picture of God’s interaction with humanity.

The first phrase describes God’s protection of His people. In ancient times the word, “keep” meant to guard or protect. God surrounds us with a hedge of protection to keep the forces of evil from destroying us.

Next, the author describes God’s grace as the Lord’s face shining on us. The light from His gaze illuminates the darkness of sin and sets us free through Christ.

Finally, the blessing ends with, “The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.” Countenance refers to visible expression on someone’s face. It’s more than a general gaze. Rather, countenance reflects emotion. God’s countenance reflects peace, love, and hope.
