In today’s verse, Peter is addressing the early church about Christ’s return. Many were asking why it was taking so long. Peter’s reply explains God’s mercy, patience, and grace towards humanity.
God wants as many people as possible to come to Him through Christ. He understands our eagerness for the Lord’s return, but wants to allow time for repentance of all.
While the verse is specifically about Christ’s return, I think the guidance also helps us understand why answers to our prayers are sometimes delayed. The Lord knows our hearts and what we can manage and sometimes an immediate answer would cause us to deviate from a path to healing. As I’ve said before, quick fixes often prevent us from experiencing lasting outcomes. A line in a song, “Painting Pictures of Egypt” by Sara Groves reminds me that “If it comes too fast, I may not appreciate it.”
I’m still learning the power of patience and trusting God’s timing. Today’s verse was a perfect reminder that God’s timing and mine don’t always line up.
