Paul’s letters to the Corinthians were severe and corrective because the church was rife with conflict, pride, and in fighting. However, 1 Corinthians 2:9 is a momentary reprieve for the overall tone of the letter. Here, Paul loosely quotes Isaiah 64:4 to highlight that the mystery of God’s redemptive plan is revealed to believers through Jesus Christ.

Paul wants his readers to understand that God’s redemptive plan is already at work in them through the Holy Spirit, which gives us access to things of heaven that others do not have.

Yet, Paul also wants them to realize that the plan includes blessings beyond anything we can imagine. All will be revealed when we stand before the throne of grace. In this promise we find hope.
