Psalm 44 is a lament attributed to the sons of Korah (from the tribe of Levi. The first 8 verses recall God’s historic faithfulness and power in helping their ancestors settle Canaan. Later verses shift the tone as the community deal with humiliating defeat and feel abandoned by God even though they contend they haven’t broken His covenant.

The psalm grapples with a painful paradox: remembering that God gave victory in the past vs. experiencing His perceived silence and rejection in the present. By opening with verse 3, the community reminds themselves that their very existence and legacy are rooted entirely in God’s grace rather than national merit, laying the groundwork for an honest, raw appeal for God to redeem them.

Verse 3 is a call to remember God’s promises and our dependence on Him. A covenant has clearly defined parameters for all involved. God is faithful to keep His part, but we are charged to keep our part as well through obedience. His love never ceases, but His intervention can be impacted by our willingness to follow His guidance instead of taking things into our own hands. Surrendering our will is a daily act of faith and obedience.
