Moses is 120 years old when he delivers today’s message to the Israelites. They are ready to enter the promised land under the leadership of Joshua. After 40 years of wandering with Moses as their leader, they faced massive uncertainty as they began the next step in their journey. Deuteronomy 31:8 is a reminder of God’s unfailing love, guidance and protection.

Moses assures them that God will be with them just as He was in the wilderness. The Lord wasn’t going to remove His closeness because of the change in leadership. Moses also reassures them that God was going ahead of them to prepare the way.

Finally, Moses encourages them by telling them not to be afraid because they are not alone. He explains that courage comes from trust in the Lord, not human strength.

Moses’s counsel to the Israelites applies to us as well. When we face change, transitions or even life stage changes, it’s easy to fear what the future holds, but the same God who brought the Israelites to the promised land, will bring us through every challenge we face if we place our trust in Him.
